Paramedicine Funding

Oxford County selected as one of 30 emergency services centres for one time funding.

OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Emergency Services has recieved a huge boost from the province. Minister of Health and Long-Term care Eric Hoskins approved funding in the amount of 83 thousand dollars for the creation of a paramedicine program in Oxford County.

Manager of Oxford County EMS, Joe Pember explained what the paramedicine program is, "Really it's about expanding the paramedic scope of practice and enhancing our tool kit so that when we encounter people that are in the community we apply specific assesment to determine the risk they're at." The money will be used to train Oxford County paramedics to work with primary healthcare partners in order to process patients more quickly.

"We will do direct referral with their consent to community agencies such as CCAC that can go in and provide the services these people need to help them live better and more independently in their homes for longer periods of time," said Pember.

He adds that the funding is crucial in implementing the program.
"Money will help us put a person on a full time basis for a short period of time to develop the linkages and the referral linkages that we need with our healthcare partners so when we do identify people are risk that information can flow very quickly."

The program is expected to be up and running by March.
