It's nutrition month and over 10000 students in Oxford have already been learning about healthy eating habits through the Student Nutrition Program
OXFORD- School kids might be able to teach their parents a little something this nutrition month.
Over ten thousand students in Oxford County have been learning about healthy eating habit through the Student Nutrition Program. As part of this program kids receive a healthy snack and learn about life long nutrition.
Student Nutrition Program Coordinator and Registered Dietitian Kelly Ferguson says it takes a lot of work to pull it all off.
"We have over 400 volunteers in Oxford County that support student nutrition programs, so they're almost entirely volunteer run. We are always in need of new volunteers that can help out at schools usually in the mornings cutting up and preparing food for students and delivering it to the classroom."
Ferguson says it is also difficult to keep this program running from a financial standpoint.
"We are always looking for support from the community whether it be through volunteering or with funding because funding is always a challenge with the rising cost of fresh fruit. So any support you can provide would be great. I'm always available at the Health Unit and ask to speak to someone about the Student Nutrition Program."
There is a way everyone can help out: the Say Yes campaign asks people to make a free pledge to the Student Nutrition Programs. Ferguson says the first round of this campaign was a huge success.
"In our region alone we raised over 1 000 pledges and for each pledge a school received they got a free breakfast or snack. So because of the success of that campaign we've now launched round two which provides the community with a second opportunity to raise new pledges."
