Monday marks the beginning of annual parking restrictions for the winter season.
OXFORD COUNTY - Tis the season for more snow, and more snowplows. Snow also brings a need for overnight parking bans.
While some motorists in the county may feel put out of inconvenienced by the tight restrictions on parking through the winter, City of Woodstock engineer Harold de Haan says the ban is, "So the drivers of the snowplows don't have to worry about hitting parked cars."
The bans are in effect starting Monday, December 1st, and remain in place until Tuesday, March 31st. Vehicles are not permitted to park on streets between the hours of 2 and 6 A.M., in order to cut the snow budget by allowing plows to complete shovelling in a single pass.
Residents in the downtown area are asked to use municipal parking lots, and There are exemptions available for families with multiple vehicles and insufficient driveway space. De Haan says drivers can apply for a special eligibility permit through the Engineering building located at 944 James St. The cost of the permit is $35 (plus taxes) and allows drivers to park on the road only if they meet the following conditions:
- the City/County recognizes your property as a legal residential property.
- your property has LESS than 2 parking spaces (garages do count as parking spaces)
- the property doesn't have space to construct off-street parking spaces on a location and of a size in accordance with the zoning bylaw or has been refused approval to construct boulevard parking
and;
- you provide sufficient proof of ownership of multiple vehicles at the residential address.
If the permit is approved, it must be properly displayed hanging on the rear-view mirror of the vehicle, and easily visible to by-law officers. If a permit isn't present, or the permit is invalid, you could be faced with a $25 dollar parking ticket.
The applications for permits can be completed at the Engineering building, or found at the City's website at
