OPP Conduct Seat Belt Campaign

An OPP seat belt campaign kicked off on September 28th and will come to an end on October 7th.

Provincial Police have kicked off 10 day seat belt campaign in hopes more people out there will remember to buckle up.

So far this year 40 people have died in collisions on OPP patrolled roads because they were not wearing their seat belt, 347 people have died over the past five years.

OPP Deputy Commissioner Brad Blair says seat belts have been proven to save lives.

"Every year, our officers tend to crash victims of all ages who are not buckled in at the time of the collision. More often than not, they die as a result of being ejected, partially ejected or from the physical trauma they sustained inside the vehicle. Fortunately, our officers have also witnessed numerous victims survive their ordeal as a result of being restrained in their seat. Every life is worth the five seconds it takes to buckle up."

It's the driver's responsibility to make sure they are buckled up along with any passenger under the age of 16 in their vehicle.

The fall seat belt campaign will be conducting law enforcement and education that focuses on the law regarding seat belts. The campaign kicked off on September 28th and will come to an end on October 7th.
