ETFO and OSSTF strike votes will take place across the province in the fall
Elementary school teachers in Ontario are one step closer to a strike.
The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario says a strike vote will take place across the province in the fall.
"ETFO members have been without an agreement for almost a year. They have been patient, but their patience has run out. We need the Ford government to take bargaining seriously and to act in good faith, as required by law," ETFO President Karen Brown said in the statement.
The union says the province "refused to engage in any meaningful discussions" about priorities such as hiring practices, class sizes, salary and working conditions.
The ETFO also notes a memo requiring teachers to conduct early reading screening for students in year two of kindergarten through grade two violates good faith duties during the bargaining process.
However, the Ministry of Education says the move was made after feedback from education sectors and unions.
The Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation is also planning to hold a strike vote this fall. In a memo obtained by the Canadian Press, the union says the government has shown "little interest" in engaging in negotiations, so little progress has been made.
