Only 13% of Car Seats Properly Installed in Safety Check

Police are stressing safety on the roads this long weekend, and that includes the proper use of car seats. As the Oxford County Injury Prevention Team found out this week, many parents don't have their seats properly installed, or they're not properly harnessing their children in those seats. They joined OPP this week in checking on car seats in Norwich and Ingersoll. They found just 3 out of 22 seats checked were properly installed. Lorna Boratto says it's paramount that the seats are used properly to prevent injuries or death. "When the seats are designed and tested to meet specifications put out by Transport Canada, they're tested according to being properly used. That means being properly installed and the child properly harnessed in. If that does not happen, the child is at risk of injury if there is a collision." The most common mistakes include: -Harness too loose -Incorrect placement of chest clip -Non-use of tether -Seat not installed tight enough -Harness straps not in correct slot Boratto says parents need to carefully read the instructions for your child seats, and consult your vehicle's owner's manual for locations of harnesses. Public Health holds monthly car seat checks, but Boratto says they're willing to help anytime by contacting them at 519-539-9800.
