Oxford County EMS paramedics and some brave citizens received the Clinical Save Award Wednesday. The Oxford County EMS are the first in North America to use a revolutionary new technology called the ZOLL AutoPulse Plus CPR-defibrillation system. The AutoPulse system administers CPR at the same time that paramedics deliver shocks to the heart through a defibrillator. This also allows paramedics to defibrillate a heart without stopping chest compressions, increasing the chances of survival for sudden cardiac arrest victims. Nicholas Visser knows first-hand how this new technology can save a life. Visser fell victim to a sudden cardiac arrest in February at a business meeting. His co-workers sprung into action and gave Visser CPR, while calling 911. Oxford County EMS arrived on scene shortly after the call. Visser on what he remembers from that day, " Honestly I don't remember that day or the day before. I just remember what people have told me. I was at a breakfast meeting with some co-workers when I went over, I don't remember any of it." Typically only 5% or 1 in 20 people survive cardiac arrest outside of a hospital. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation between 35-40 thousand people suffer from a sudden cardiac arrest each year.
