Oxford County's Manager of Strategic Initiatives says we are still going aim for the 100 percent renewable energy goal, even with the provinces cuts to green energy programs.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County is still committed to reaching 100 percent renewable energy by 2050, even though the provincial government has announced cuts to green energy programs.
Manager of Strategic Initiatives Jay Heaman says this may mean a change of course, but the destination remains the same.
"We can't look back, we have to look forward. All the indications looking forward are that renewable energy is going to be a real economic driver; in fact it's going to be a requirement for municipalities to continue to be viable."
Heaman says renewable energy will have to stand on its own merit and value.
"Oxford County has one the largest off grid renewable energy agricultural systems in the country. Most people are not aware of it, but that system was installed without the benefit of any incentive dollars or government funding."
When it comes to the province's cancellation of the electric vehicle rebate program, Heaman says it may delay the transition to energy efficient transportation but it will still happen. He says there are too many compelling reasons not to move forward; including efficiency, maintenance costs and the fact that you can generate your own fuel from renewable source.
