More Slots in the 'Stock?

Could Woodstock be in line for yet more slot machines? That's what Mayor Pat Sobeski believes could happen with the coming changes to the OLG. The province is going to be hiring private firms to run the casinos and slot machines across the province. Sobeski tells Heart FM he believes the government will look to cut the percentage municipalities get from the slots, without hurting the bottom line. "They expect the municipalities should be in line with what they're receiving now. You look at the numbers...it seems like the commission paid to municipalities will decrease, but again, there might be more gaming machines inside." Woodstock currently has 175 machines at the Woodstock Raceway. The city takes in 1.2-million dollars a year, which is 5 per cent of that revenue. Sobeski attended a meeting Monday in London with the OLG, where he was assured a private company will be taking over the operations of the Woodstock slots. "We were pretty much left with assurances there are people interested in the Toronto market, and there's also gaming operations that are interested in the smaller markets, so that made me feel better. The changes are in an effort to help the province pay down the $14-billion deficit. Sobeski says a meeting is set for June 21st in Milton that will see more information come to light.
