The recent plane crash focuses on a big hole that Canada needs to fill.
NEW YORK - The recent fatal crash between an Air Canada plane and a fire truck at New York's LaGuardia Airport brought focus into the increasing pressure on air traffic controllers in both countries.
The industry has been plagued by shortages of controllers, and many American controllers have also worked without pay during previous government shutdowns.
Nav Canada has licenced more than 300 air traffic controllers since 2023.
Aviation expert John Gradek notes how the country is retiring about 150 air traffic controllers every year, and the shortage right now is about 15-hundred.
