Locals Call for Moratorium on Wind Turbines

A group of local concerned citizens are calling for a moratorium on wind turbine projects in the face of a Health Canada study announced today. Health Canada is promising a comprehensive study on the health implications of living near a wind turbine. In a release from the East Oxford Community Alliance, they're concerned the 2014 release date of Health Canada's study may be too late. They're worried proposed projects on Gunn's Hill Road in Norwich and in Innerkip may be moving forward before the study is released. In their release the East Oxford Community Alliance states, "The Wind Turbine Health Study announced today may offer no hope to residents of the Gunn?s Hill area if the project is allowed to proceed and is completed before the study completion date of 2014. What recourse will residents have in 2014 if the findings of the Wind Turbine Health Study determine that there are negative health effects and that families are at risk? Will the turbines that are in operation be forced to shut down? Will the turbine company be forced to pay compensation or buy out properties? By launching this study today, East Oxford Community Alliance considers this an acknowledgement that Health Canada is aware of potential problems and that immediate action should be taken to prevent any further development of wind turbines within a safe distance specified by Health Canada." Health Canada will study the health of residents of some 2000 homes across the country in 8-12 communities that reside near wind turbines.
