After competing agility competitions for 28 years, a Woodstock woman will be the oldest competitor at the Agility Association of Canada Nationals next week.
WOODSTOCK - A Woodstock woman will be the oldest competitor at the Agility Association of Canada Nationals in Maxville.
89-year-old Shirley McRitchie-Telford will be competing with her five-year-old American Eskimo named Kaity and Brier, her eight-year-old Pom-Chihuahua mix.
She says each agility course features lots of unique challenges.
"At Regionals and Nationals you would run a course of 19 to 21 obstacles which could include jumps, a tire jump a five foot A frame, a teeter-totter and 12 weave poles."
Telford got her start as an agility competitor 28 years ago, one year after the sport was introduced in Canada.
"In 1990 where I was training obedience, they started agility with homemade equipment because it was brand new. Once you try agility with your dog obedience is boring because agility is very active."
Telford went on to win Regionals and Nationals in 2001. She was competing with one of her previous American Eskimo's in the 16-inch division.
The 2018 Agility Association of Canada Nationals will kick off on Thursday August 16th and wrap up on Sunday August 19th.
