Bill C-242 looks to strengthen bail laws to keep repeat offenders off the streets.
OTTAWA - The Jail Not Bail Act has been introduced in the House of Commons by Oxford MP Arpan Khanna.
Khanna says his private members bill, known as Bill C-242, calls for bail reform to keep dangerous repeat offenders off the streets.
"The Jail Not Bail Act will restore balance in our justice system and put the safety of Canadians first. Law-abiding Canadians and families deserve a justice system that protects them, not one that prioritizes repeat, violent offenders."
If it's passed, it would strengthen bail laws to prevent anyone convicted of a major offence in the last 10 years from getting bail. This would include firearm, sexual, kidnapping, human trafficking, home invasion, robbery, extortion, arson, and assault charges.
It would also prohibit anyone with an indictable conviction from serving as a guarantor, enforce bail conditions on guarantors, and require non-residents to surrender their passports upon request.
Khanna first announced the Jail Not Bail Act during a press conference with Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre in Vaughn on September 11th. Woodstock Mayor Jerry Acchione was in attendance alongside Woodstock Police Chief Rod Wilkinson and Deputy Chief Nick Novacich.
