A new housing and homelessness plan has been endorsed by Oxford County Council.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Council has signed off on a new housing and homelessness plan for the next 10 years.
It's called Housing for All, 2024-2033 and it was endorsed by Council during yesterday's meeting.
Warden Marcus Ryan says it contains certain policies that detail how the County can increase not just affordable housing, but all housing in general.
"The best and most effective way for us to create a new affordable housing unit is to make it so that someone can afford to move out of that affordable housing unit. But in order for them to move out, we need to provide that space."
He adds the County does not build market-rate housing but it does zone for it.
"There's lots of properties all over Oxford County that are zoned for that, but because of interest rates, inflation and things like that a lot of developers are not building things they are actually approved to build. It's perfectly understandable reasons, but that doesn't work for us. So this is about strategies where we can do all of those things to make that chain of events happen."
It also highlights steps the county can take to reduce homelessness and it highlights Oxford's accomplishments over the years, including its efforts to create more transitional homes in the community.
During his interview on the Heart FM morning show today, Warden Ryan also discussed the following:
- The amazing turnout for the Saturday portion of the Embro Truck and Tractor Pull.
- How trains and railway crossings can back up traffic, but there's little a municipality can do to address it.
- The 2025 Budget Survey and how residents have until August 30th to provide their input.
