Woodstock was well represented on Parliament Hill for the Peace Officer's Memorial
WOODSTOCK - Officers from across Ontario joined together for a 679 kilometre bike journey to honour those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
The officers began their ride in Alymer at the Ontario Police College and made the gruelling journey to Ottawa to take part in the Peace Officer's Memorial. Woodstock Police Inspector Paul Hess says it was a tough ride, but he never forgot what he was doing it all for. "It was a long way, I can tell you we rode 216 km on day one to Toronto, 194 km to Belleville, 173 to Brockville, and our easy day was 123 to Ottawa. So a little bit of ibuprofen and rest and relaxation when I got home."
As the Ride to Remember passed through local communities, Inspector Hess says they received a warm welcome. "It was great to be able to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. Policing is a family and we just want to show support to the family members and show them that their family members will never be forgotten."
When they arrived in Ottawa they rode right up to Parliament Hill to join in on the memorial service. "It was great to be able to represent the Woodstock Police Service on the Hill - a great sense of pride. I've never attended that before. And a lot of camaraderie; there were between 5 000 and 7 000 officers on the Hill and it was great to be able to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty."
