A new fibre to home network will improve internet connection for 2,116 homes and businesses in rural parts of Norfolk County.
NORFOLK COUNTY - The Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada is investing nearly $3 million to improve internet connectivity in Norfolk County.
The money will be used to construct a fibre to the home network for the communities of Wilsonville, Boston, Bealton, Dundurn, Waterford, Townsend Centre, Villa Nova and Bloomsburg. It will improve internet to about 2,116 homes and businesses in those communities.
The entire project will cost about $7.7 million to complete. The contracts were awarded by SWIFT, a not-for-profit corporation initiated by local municipalities to address connectivity in Southwestern Ontario. SWOX Mayor and SWIFT Chair David Mayberry says this will improve internet connectivity for rural residents in Norfolk County.
"SWIFT is proud of the quick and steady progress that is being made in Norfolk County to extend and improve broadband services. Today's newly announced fibre connections will ensure that many more residents and businesses are provided with greater access to online opportunities to support social and economic growth in our rural communities. In a time when access to high-speed internet is critical, we are pleased to be working with the governments of Ontario and Canada to further expand broadband services across Southwestern Ontario."
The project will be completed by August. Haldimand Norfolk MPP Toby Barrett says having high speed internet is absolutely crucial in today's climate.
"Residents and small businesses in Norfolk County will benefit from this expansion of local high-speed internet service. Now more than ever, access to high-quality broadband is critical for working and living, and this steady progression means an improved quality of life for residents and businesses."
