Help Control the Pet Population

The County of Brant is taking a page out of Bob Barkers playbook and asking residents to spay and neuter your pets to help control the pet population.

BRANT COUNTY - The County of Brant is promoting responsible pet ownership.

They are asking residents to make sure your cats and dogs are spayed or neutuered to help contol the pet population. In theory, one cat can have up to 180 kittens in her lifetime. This can quickly lead to an overpopulation of cats in our community. Both female and male cats can start reproducing at 5 to 6 months of age.

Last June, the Co-Founders of Roosters Community Awareness Towards Homeless Cats attended Brant County Council. The have helped over 800 cats and kittens in the County to be spayed, neutered or re-homed. The delegation was to bring attention to the fact that our pets need to be spayed and neutered to help control the pet population.

There are many ways the community can help:

- Pet owners should spay and neuter their pets.

- Do not abandon your pet. Please seek assistance from Hillside Kennels (1.888.469.3247), Brant SPCA (519.756.6620) or a reputable rescue group if you can no longer care for your pet.

- If a homeless cat community is found, visit www.brant.ca/AnimalControl for contact information.

- Report lost animals to Hillside Kennels so the animal has a better chance of being reunited with their owner.

- If you are concerned for an animal’s welfare, please contact Ontario SPCA at (1-833-9-ANIMAL).

- Community members and business owners can share and post the “Snip, Snip Hurray!” flyer, as found on the County’s website, at www.brant.ca/AnimalControl to help promote controlling the pet population.

The County of Brant strives to be a responsible pet community and as such, pet owners are reminded to:

- Vaccinate your pet, particularly for rabies

- License your dog with the County so we can help get them home to you (www.brant.ca/Dog)

- Leash your pet when out for walks, in parks and on trails. A leash free dog park is available at the Simply Grand Dog Park, 8 Green Lane, Paris. More information is available at www.brant.ca/ParisParks

- Clean up after your pet.

- Never leave a pet in a hot vehicle.
