If everything goes according to plan the Board of Health for Oxford, Elgin St. Thomas Health Unit will be fully operational on May 1st.
Oxford County Council was presented with an update on the upcoming merger of the Oxford, Elgin and St. Thomas Health Units.
If everything goes according to plan the Board of Health for Oxford, Elgin St. Thomas Health Unit will be fully operational on May 1st. Executive Director of Elgin St. Thomas Pubic Health Cynthia St. John says they are still working on staffing details.
"We don't have all the answers yet, but I can say that both boards, right now are very committed to strengthening public health in their communities. Nobody is going down this path thinking their is going to be huge cost savings because their is going to be mass staff reductions. In fact it is about finding efficiencies so that we can reinvest in public health program and service delivery."
St. John says they have a lot of work to do over the next three months as they get to know the entire region.
"The next three months will be a lot of exploration and understanding all of the communities involved. So all all of the communities in Oxford, Elgin and the community of St. Thomas. I believe that at the Governance level, both boards will continue to meet and governor their respective organizations until May 1st but a lot of work is happening in the background around policy development, by-law development and so forth."
St. John says they will be spending a lot of time getting their message out to the public in how this merger will benefit the community.
