Buried debris from old construction site causing delay in the Habitat for Humanity Woodstock builds.
WOODSTOCK - Unforeseen construction challenges have pushed the Woodstock Habitat for Humanity builds back at least 6-8 weeks.
President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Heartland Jeff Duncan says they started to dig a couple of weeks ago for the foundation and that's when the issues popped up.
"We found some brick and other debris -- looks like from an old building or something -- that was buried in the ground there so a surprise but nothing that we could really foresee and nobody certainly indicated through the whole process that it might exist so we engaged with Sierra Construction and they brought some engineers on board."
Duncan says they are now working with engineers determine what type of foundation and footings they can put in based on the soil conditions.
"There will be some expense above and beyond what we would have budgeted obviously because you've got to do some different steps. I don't know what that looks like. It would be unfair of me to give a forecast on what it would be but it will definitely cost us more to develop the site and get the foundation in."
Duncan says the families have been notified of the problems.
