A Woodstock resident was lucky to escape injury when a grease fire broke out yesterday afternoon.
WOODSTOCK - No one was injured when a grease fire broke out at a Woodstock apartment.
Just after 4:30 p.m. yesterday afternoon the Woodstock Fire Department received a call about a fire at 692 Dundas Street Unit 2.
When the first crew arrived the noticed smoke at the rear of the building on the second floor and a call back for all available firefighters was requested. By the time the blaze was extinguished, around $50,000 in damaged had been caused.
Thankfully, the residents of the unit had safely escaped the building with no injuries.
Fire Investigation and Prevention were on scene and at the end of the investigation they determined the fire had started in the kitchen while the resident was cooking french fries on the stove top. The resident only narrowly escaped injuries after attempting to put out the grease fire with water.
If you do experience a grease fire while cooking, slide a pot lid over the pot or pan to smother the flames, turn off the heat, and call 911. Never use water on a pot of overheated grease.
The Woodstock Fire Department says the investigation also revealed there were no working smoke alarms at the time of the fire.
