Baseball teams from across Ontario and Quebec will be in Innerkip for the Gord Marshall Memorial Tournament in support of CMHA Oxford.
INNERKIP - 18 teams have signed up for the 12th annual Gord Marshall Memorial Ladies Fastball Tournament in Innerkip.
Since the tournament started they have raised over $110 000 for the Oxford County Chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society. They have also raised thousands for the Innerkip Parks and Recreation committee in memory of a former friend, ball player, and umpire Gord Marshall. This year the tournament is going to raise funds for the Canadian Mental Health Association of Oxford County.
Media Spokesperson for the tournament Kyle Smith tells Heart FM the level of competition is going to be really strong once again this year. "We are down from 24 teams to 18 teams this year however the quality of play is going to be the same, if not maybe even a little better as we have 18 strong teams competing. The quality is definitely not going to hurt, I mean were talking - we got the reigning National champions from Whitby coming, the runners up from Quebec coming, diamond champions in Chepstow and we've got some top tier intermediate teams coming so the quality will be second to none."
The Gord Marshall Memorial Tournament was initiated in 2004 as a local fundraiser for the Innerkip ladies’ team. In 2006, local umpires were asked to take over operation of the event and decided to use it as a means to not only showcase excellent ladies’ fastball but also to raise money for charity.
The four day tournament runs from July 2nd to the 5th at the Innerkip Sports Field.
