Ottawa has given General Motors 15 days to provide an update on the CAMI situation.
INGERSOLL - We should be getting an update on the future of CAMI in the next few weeks.
Industry Minister Melanie Joly says General Motors (GM) has 15 days to do so, adding the workers deserve clarity and action.
The fate of the Ingersoll plant is uncertain after GM announced earlier this week that it's discontinuing the production of the BrightDrop electric delivery van. Officials said the decision was based on market demand and did not reflect the commitment and skill of the 1,200 employees that work there.
The federal government also cut some of the tariff relief for GM and Stellantis yesterday, but limiting the number of American made vehicles can be imported into Canadian without having to deal with retaliatory tariffs. The remission quota for GM has been reduced by 24 percent, while Stellantis faces a 50 percent reduction.
Officials say these automakers have to maintain Canadian jobs and investment if they want to access the tariff-free quota.
