French Catholic Schools from across Ontario will be raising the Franco-Ontarian flag today.
WOODSTOCK - Sainte-Margeurite-Bourgeoys and Notre-Dame Catholic French-language schools will be holding a special ceremony today for Franco-Ontarian Flag Day.
Joseph Pickard, the Director of Education at Conseil Scolaire Catholique Providence, says they will be having flag raising ceremonies across the province.
"There are celebrations going on all across our school board on the 25th of September. Also across the province of Ontario because it's a very important day for Franco-Ontarians."
In Woodstock they will have a flag raising ceremony at the Ste-Marguerite Bourgeoys at 10 a.m. today. You can expect to hear speeches from the principal, a city representative and multiple students.
Pickard tells us about the iconic flag and what it represents.
"There are two colours; there's green and white. The symbol behind that is the green represents the summer and white represents winter in Ontario. There are two other elements in there; there's the trillium, the official flower of the province of Ontario and the fleur-de-lis which is the symbol of francophone heritage."
The first Franco-Ontarian flag raising was held at Laurentian University in Sudbury back in 1975, but it didn't receive official status from the province until 2001.
