The Grand River Conservation Authority has issued a "Flood Watch" today for the villages of Ayr and New Hamburg. 30 to 45 mm of rain and snow over the past two days has the Nith River up to its flooding threshold. Low lying areas along the Grand, Conestogo and Speed River could also be hit with flooding. The GRCA says the water will be rising over the next couple of days as runoff from the northern portions of the watershed flows downstream. The flow is expected to reach its peak in New Hamburg Thursday morning, and in Ayr around noon on Thursday. Water levels are expected to remain high through the weekend. As of right now, the area is in a Level 1 Flood Watch, but that could escalate due to ice jams caused by dropping temperatures on Thursday. Areas of concern: New Hamburg: Milton Street and Jacob Street areas. Ayr: Tanner and Piper streets. Residents are advised not to park vehicles in low lying areas overnight.
