Fire Safety House Retiring

The Oxford County Fire Safety House has helped educate children about what to do in a house fire since 1997.

OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County's Fire Safety House is retiring after 20 years of service.

Kevin Butler, the President of the Oxford County Fire Department's Mutual Aid Association says the house has helped educate children about what they should do if they are caught in a house fire.

"We're able to run the children through it. We have a bed upstairs in a bedroom and we are able to put fog in it and make it look like smoke for the children to realize what they need to do in a fire and how to get out."

The small kitchen area in the house was used to teach children about stove fires.

Although lots of local fire departments have taken advantage of the mobile house throughout the years, it is very big and awkward to move around. You need to decent sized pick up truck in order to transport it.

Butler tells Heart FM they are looking into the possibility of buying an inflatable fire safety house.

"We could use it year round, we could set something up inside a gymnasium so it would be more useful and easier for us to use."

A new fire safety house could cost anywhere between $80,000 and $100,000. The retired house was purchased in 1997 and it cost approximately $35,000 at the time.
