Effective June 20th, vaccine mandates for federal public service and transportation workers, as well as unvaccinated Canadians traveling domestically or internationally, will be dropped.
The Canadian government has scrapped the requirement for domestic and outbound international travelers to be fully immunized against COVID-19.
Effective June 20th, unvaccinated Canadians will be allowed to travel via trains, busses and airplanes, but they'll still need to quarantine upon returning to Canada from other countries.
Meanwhile, foreign nationals coming into Canada will still need to show proof of vaccination.
The announcement was made today by Health Minister Jean-Yves DuClos, Transport Minister Omar Alghabra, Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Treasury Board President Mona Fortier.
The officials say the mandates were not intended to be permanent, though mandates may be reinstated if case counts climb again.
In addition, the vaccine mandate is also being dropped effective June 20th for federal public servants and transportation workers.
Fortier says staff currently on administrative leave without pay due to the policy will be contacted by their managers in order to resume duties.
As well, the government expects vaccine requirements enacted by separate agencies, including Crown corporations, to be dropped.
According to the government website, about 98.5 percent of federal public workers are fully immunized against COVID-19.
