Farm Food and Beyond

Sustaining agriculture in Ontario was a hot topic during the first day of the Outdoor Farm Show.

WOODSTOCK - The Ontario Farm Environmental Coalition used the Outdoor Farm Show Today as their platform to unveil Farm Food and Beyond.

Farm Food and Beyond is their commitment to the sustainability initiative, a collaborative project of Ontario Farmers and food and beverage manufacturers. The coalition has been around for 25 years and is made up of six agriculture based organizations in Ontario including the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, Farm and Food Care, Provision Coalition, Grassroots Innovation, the Ontario Agrifood Technologies and the Christian Farmers of Ontario. At the show they laid out their plan to improve agricultural sustainability.

President of the OFA Don McCabe spoke at the session and said agriculture is the single most important business in Ontario and we need to get people to understand that.

"The reality is folks we are not telling our story, and this particular plan now moving us forward will allow us to tell our story while at the same time first and foremost, ensuring that Ontario farms are profitable and have a business for future generations. That is why I am proud to stand here today in a world of social license to say we must move forward to ensure that we bring the best pieces of all that we do together and illustrate to the world, Ontario is the place to invest, because we have the pieces right, and part of the social license of having the manoeuvrability because in our line of work mother nature always works but at the end of the day we will be there to put food on the table for the people of Ontario."

The sustainability plan talks about the ongoing concern about the loss of farmland in Ontario and developing new methods and technologies to maximize the farmland we do have.
