The Oxford Coalition for Social Justice has awarded five local schools with composting bins to continue their green work.
Schools in Oxford are being rewarded for going green.
The Oxford Coalition for Social Justice has recognized the efforts of five local schools by awarding composting bins. To merit these prizes the schools took part in different green initiatives and educational practices:
At Algonquin Public School Rachael Taylor's class is going for designation as an Ontario Eco-School, planning a waste audit, an outdoor classroom, and a pollinator garden as a Monarch Butterfly way station.
The Environmental Lead at Roch Carrier French Immersion school says Mme Hughes' Paper Pirate will continue to sort and recycle paper properly as they continue to aim for litterless lunches.
St. Michael's Green Team submitted an electronic entry about removing compost from the waste where it can spoil recyclable material. They plan to use it as soil for trees, bushes, and flowers on school property.
Sharon Caldwell's grade 2 and 3 class in Plattsville dropped everything to admire their new composter when it arrived. They are currently learning how humans can have a positive impact on the environment.
And College Avenue Secondary School was also a recipient of a composter as they continue composting efforts in the Hospitality Department and cafeteria kitchen. They will also be auditing electricity use, water consumption, and classroom recycling.
Chair of the Oxford Coalition for Social Justice Bryan Smith says these young people bring a passion and enthusiasm to environmental stewardship that can help bring about real change.
"Knowing that in many families, and I've heard this said, the kids are the recycling police at home and say to the parents, 'No that doesn't go in the garbage. That can be recycled.'"
