Local officials are preaching the buddy system and supervision during drowning prevention week.
Local officials are preaching the buddy system during drowning prevention week.
Volunteer Spokesperson for the Red Cross Jennelle Warren tells Heart FM staying in pairs is always a good idea even for teens and adults.
"We still want to be swimming with that buddy to make sure we are being safe and if we do get into any trouble there is someone around to help us or go get some help, also if we are swimming in open water like lakes or rivers we want to make sure that we are keeping a really close eye on the weather because the weather is going to have a big impact on the water conditions for us."
Supervisor of Aquatics and Recreation Programs in Woodstock Patrick King says they are promoting the On Guard program all week.
"We give out lanyards and they go around the person who is supervising the kids around the water and it just designates who is responsible for supervising the kids in the water and you can trade off to another adult who will resume the supervising duties."
On guard cards will be handed out all week at Lions Pool and the Southside Aquatics Centre.
