Vaccination rates are below the provincial average in the Southwestern Public Health region, especially for people over 50 getting a booster and children over the age of 5.
SWPH - Southwestern Public Health is concerned about the local vaccination rate.
Local Medical Officer of Health Dr. Joyce Lock says our rates are lower than the provincial average.
"I am particularly worried about the low uptake of booster doses in our region, especially in people over the age of 50 and the relatively low uptake in vaccines in children aged 5-11, compared to the provincial average."
Dr. Lock is worried about the misinformation circulating in our community.
"Being fully vaccinated reduces your risk of hospitalization by 83 percent and your risk of ICU admission by 93 percent.
She says the local data shows you are better off getting vaccinated.
"In our region, the rate hospitalization is 31.8 per 100,000 for people who are vaccinated and 103.4 per 100,000 for people who are not vaccinated. This means the rate of hospitalization is more than three times higher for unvaccinated people in our region."
