A group in Oxford continues to try and attract general practitioners to the county in light of a doctor shortage.
OXFORD COUNTY - The Oxford Physician Recruitment Group is hoping to attract more general practitioners to Oxford County. They are hoping to bring in 26 physicians in the next five years.
Dr. Gerry Rowland tells Heart FM most of the doctors in the area are getting older.
"We know that the average age of physicians is 54. They're going to start retiring, having heart attacks, doing the nasty things that happen to you as you get older and we're going to have to replace them."
As of right now there are about 10,000 people in Oxford County without a doctor.
Rowland says there are a lot of opportunities for physicians in Oxford.
"The opportunities for general practitioners in Oxford are much broader than they are within the large cities. You can do office practice, you can work in a hospital, you can work in the emergency department, you can combine all three."
Rowland adds it is also cheaper to live in Oxford compared to some of the big cities in the area.
Any doctor thinking about retirement or considering working in Oxford is asked to reach out to the Oxford Physician Recruitment Group through their website.
