Curator Wanted

City of Woodstock looking for new Art Gallery Curator

Less than one year after announcing their new Art Gallery Curator, the City of Woodstock is once again looking to fill the position.

The current curator Sheila Perry is said to be leaving for personal not professional reasons. 

During budget deliberations, City Council approved spending an additional $400,000 in funding, as requested by Perry to reconfigure the $5 million building with the condition that 50 percent would have to be fundraised within four years otherwise the gallery's operating budget would not increase.

Woodstock Mayor Pat Sobeski says there's no need to worry that the money wont be used.

"She has laid out a plan. She has come in and done her fixes. We are quite confident that we will now recruit and find someone else who will carry on with the programs so it's unfortunate that this opportunity came up timing wise but the programs will continue." 

Sobeski says there are no hard feelings when it comes to Perry's departure.

"She had signed a two year contract and everything is timing. If the provincial funding in Newfoundland hadn't shut down the gallery in Newfoundland she would probably still be there. In the world of art galleries I guess timing is everything."

Sobeski says they are aggressively seeking a replacement.

"Sheila is not leaving until June so there is a little time there but no, there will probably be a gap but again whoever we get will certainly, one of the criteria in the interview process is to make sure they have the talents to carry on."

Applications are being accepted for the position until 4pm on April 16.
