Next county council budget meeting will discuss a fair way to pay the courthouse deficit.
Oxford County Council is going to discuss a fair way to pay the courthouse deficit at the next budget meeting.
The province promised to pay for court security and transportation 10 years ago, dedicating $125 million a year to the cause. But the cost of inflation has brought up the price, resulting in a deficit for the city of Woodstock.
Warden David Mayberry has sent a letter to the province about this issue.
"We're certainly encouraging the province to bring cost up to the current time, so they can absorb some of the increased costs because of inflation."
County Council is going to discuss using budget funds to pay for 40 percent of the deficit on Tuesday, just in case the province says no.
"What we're trying to do is establish a fair and equitable way for the county to contribute towards those costs. Since everyone uses the courthouse it seems a little unfair that one municipality has to pick up the full tab."
If approved the county would pay the $117,255 using a special levy in the other municipalities. This would exclude Woodstock, as they prepare to pay the remaining 60 percent.
The proposed county budget for 2018 is just over $230 million.
