Dave Beres would like to continue his legacy on Tillsonburg Town Council.
TILLSONBURG - A longstanding member of Tillsonburg Town Council would like to stay on for another four years.
Dave Beres has served eight terms on council, first being elected in 1994. He served five of those terms as a councillor and his fellow councillors elected him as the Deputy Mayor for the past three terms. The Deputy Mayor steps in for the Mayor when needed, so Beres briefly covered mayoral duties for six months in 2014, after the Mayor at the time left council prematurely.
If he's elected for another term on council, Beres is hoping to serve as the Deputy Mayor once again. He would also like to keep the tax rate down.
"The taxes should stay within cost of living and in the 32 years I have served, they have always done that. That is my big argument when it comes to budget time, keep the taxes within cost of living. Let's not be ridiculous, but we have to have the services or something has to be sacrificed."
He would also like to recruit more physicians, address homelessness, and open more sports fields and playgrounds.
"In the last five years, pickleball was not even heard of prior to that and but now everybody wants pickleball. So let's build pickleball courts! We can do that because we have the land and it's not an expensive sport."
Beres says the town also needs a third ice pad and an indoor walking trail that could be used year round.
Outside of council chambers, Beres has been an active member of the Tillsonburg Lions Club for about 50 years and he's also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He's retired now, but his family owned a well known business on Broadway for several years, and it still bears his last name to this day.
During his interview with Heart FM, he had this closing comment to share.
"In all elections, people say we need new blood and we do, but because we're elected at large in Tillsonburg yes we need new blood, but we also need some continuity, and I would like to bring voice of continuity. I bring the history, the experience, and the connections. So get some new blood, and allow me to be your voice of continuance."
The municipal election is scheduled for October 26th.
