An audit has revealed that about 7% of the large items picked up in Oxford County this summer were recyclable.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Public Works conducted an audit for their large item pick ups this summer. It was determined that about only 7% of the materials collected were recyclable.
Director of Public Works Robert Walton explains how some pieces of furniture can not be recycled.
"There's materials within furniture that has paint varnish and other materials like that to make it not useable for products for heating."
Walton says more recyclable materials might be found if items are taken apart.
"Since we are using compactors to do this some of that material which may be potentially disassembled, some of it is crushed and is not available."
Disassembling items would take up vast amounts of employee time.
According to Walton, staff audits will be conducted before future large item pick ups in order to make sure the right items are being collected.
