City councillors didn't balk at the 2.2-million dollar price tag to rehabilitate Southside Pond. Council voted 6-1 in favour of keeping the pond. It will have to be dredged, contaminated soil removed, and a forebay will be installed to catch future sediment. The decision goes against the wishes of the Environmental Advisory Committee and the Upper Thames, who wanted to see a stream developed to keep the water moving. Only councillor Jim Northcott voted against the plan to keep the pond. He also sits on the Environmental Committee. However, the rest of council felt residents overwhelmingly wanted to see the historic pond preserved. The plan is now subject to a 30-day public comment period.
