Ingersoll's Mayor is looking to throw down a large roadblock for Walker Environmental Group's mega landfill proposal.
Ted Comiskey has tabled a motion that will be up for discussion at County Council's next meeting, on October 23rd.
It calls for the County to change its Official Plan to "ensure that the County's land use policies prohibit the consideration of new landfill sites where such sites are proposed to be established primarily for the importation of waste from outside of the County, and not for the purposes of addressing the County's waste disposal needs."
Comiskey says the message is simple. "What we're saying is that we don't want another landfill in Oxford County that would be bringing waste in from external use. We don't want to have the County land used up for other people's waste."
Comiskey says at the very least, he hopes the move would force an Ontario Municipal Board hearing with Walker. "Well the impact will be there, certainly. Any of the decisions made by the County can be disputed at the OMB."
While Comiskey is unsure if he'll get the support from his fellow councillors to pass the motion, he hopes people will speak up in the next couple of weeks to let their elected officials know how they feel about the issue. "People to stand up and take notice and say 'No, we as Oxford County do not wish this to happen.' The motion, the way it is written, is of the best interest to the people of Oxford County."
