A weekly support group for parents with children who are experiencing suicidal thoughts is now meeting on a weekly basis at the CMHA Woodstock office.
OXFORD COUNTY - The Canadian Mental Health Association of Oxford is now has a support group for parents whose children may be experiencing suicidal thoughts and feelings. The group had their first meeting yesterday and will be meeting on a weekly basis at the CMHA Woodstock office.
Heather Cowan is a social worker with the CMHA and she says it's a safe place to talk to other parents going through similar situations.
"Often times when people have children that are experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviours; you feel very isolated, you feel very alone, you feel like you are the only parent going through it. The reality is you're not and having a safe place to open up that conversation and not feel stigmatized I think is very important and that's what we're hoping this group will give parents."
The support group meets at 6:30pm Wednesday evenings and things tend to wrap up at around 8pm. The informal meetings are free to attend and minor refreshments are provided. There is also no commitment required, so parents can just drop in if they would like.
