4 Roads Management Services says about 57-million dollars worth of work is needed on Woodstock roads.
WOODSTOCK- Badly damaged roads in Woodstock classified as NOW roads are getting the cold shoulder from 4 Roads Management Services.
The company delivered it's report to City Council Thursday night, outlining a suggested approach to road work. The presentation noted that a total of 57-million dollars was needed to maintain and reconstruct city roads. The long-term solution the presentation suggested was to put a band-aid on badly damaged roads that require more expensive reconstruction work and focus on 'keeping good roads good.'
David Anderson, Asset Management Specialist with 4 Roads Management Services says the suggested plan is to defer badly damaged roads that require more expensive work. "Deferring a NOW need road is less costly than deferring a road that needs resurfaced. As an example, I can resurface it for a dollar and to reconstruct it, it`s you know 3 and 4 and 5 dollars, so that`s why it`s significantly more expensive to reconstruct."
The plan is to focus on maintaining roads before they become a costly fix.
"We`re trying to optimize or get the best bang for the buck out of the money that`s provided and that keeps the taxes at a lower level and keeps it at that level in the longer term by deferring the reconstruction needs of roads that are good. What we really want to do is keep the good roads good."
Anderson says the outlook for Woodstock roads is actually pretty good considering they are above the provincial standard of 60 per cent.
Around 4-million dollars was allocated in the 2014 budget for road construction and resurfacing.
