Carney Liberals Secure Majority Government

The Liberals have 174 seats in the House of Commons after winning three federal byelections yesterday,

OTTAWA - It's official, Prime Minister Mark Carney now leads a majority Liberal government.

The Liberals won all three of the federal byelections yesterday. Danielle Martin secured a victory in Toronto's University-Rosedale riding, Dolly Begum won the race in nearby Scarborough Southwest, and Tatiana Auguste secured the seat in Montreal's Terrebonne riding.

This brings the Liberals total number seats in the House of Commons to 174.

The Carney government has made Canadian history, becoming the first federal government to switch from a minority to a majority between elections. The Liberals secured 169 seats after the federal election in May 2025. Five MPs crossed the floor to join the Liberals recently, four from the Conservatives and one from the NDP.

In his official statement released last night, Prime Minister Carney said it's time to come together, so we can build a strong Canada for all. He also said the Liberals will work with all parties and solicit all perspectives in Parliament. 

Justin Trudeau led Canada's last majority government went the Liberals came into power in 2015, but that government downsized to a minority after the next federal election in 2019.
