The cause of the fire that caused the evacuation of an apartment building on Harford St. this weekend was careless smoking. Increasing the danger to the situation, the fire department says the smoke alarm in the unit was also disabled. "The individual in this unit is very lucky he woke up in the early stages of this fire, without a working smoke alarm your chances of survival are very small as the smoke in a fire puts you into a deeper sleep, this easy could have been a fatality" said Fire Inspector Lukasz Kaspryzk. Residents evacuated from a 3-storey apartment building on Harford St. in Woodstock early Sunday morning were able to return to their homes. That's with the exception of the third floor, where one unit that suffered significant damage in an early morning blaze. Woodstock Police Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods says local emergency crews were on the scene quickly. "The call came in at 1:34AM, we arrived on scene at 1:38. Smoke was showing, flames were showing. We were able to knock down the fire fairly quickly. We have one individual displace, there was about $100,000 damage to the apartment." That resident was taken to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, along with 3 or 4 Woodstock Police officers that took on smoke evacuating the building. Karen, who lives in the building explains what she woke up to. "Loud banging, get up, fire, get out, everybody has got to get out. All you heard is bang, bang, bang, like they were going to pound the door in." Residents spent the night at the Quality Inn, under the care of the Red Cross and those on the 1st and 2nd floor were able to return Sunday night. A reminder to check your smoke alarms and ensure they are working.
