Carbon Monoxide Does Not Take A Summer Break

The Hawkins-Gignac Foundation reminds everyone carbon monoxide can affect you at the cottage or while you're on vacation.

The Hawkins-Gignac Foundation wants everyone to have Peace of Mind for their Piece of Heaven this summer. The foundation is kicking off their summer carbon monoxide awareness campaign.

Executive Director John Gignac says carbon monoxide does not take a summer vacation.

"Carbon monoxide is still lurking out there even at your cottage or whether you are in a boat, RV, or even in a tent. So now we have these CO alarms that are battery operated and you can take them anywhere and you'll be carbon monoxide safe. We have accidents, it doesn't matter where it happens, let's be prepared."

Carbon Monoxide is a deadly, colourless, odourless gas which has the same density as air. Back in 2008 OPP Constable Laurie Hawkins and her family fell victim to carbon monoxide poisoning in their Woodstock home.

The Hawkins-Gignac Foundation played a key role in passing the Hawkins-Gignac Act in 2013. The act makes it law for all homes with attached garages, fireplaces, fuel burning heating systems or appliances, or any source of carbon monoxide to have working detectors.

Gignac says the foundation has continued working with Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman over the years.

"We are now concentrating after the bill. We need to educate Canadians because they need to learn how to take care of their smoke and their CO alarms."

The average carbon monoxide detector has a life span of 10 years. Heart FM has teamed up with the Hawkins-Gignac Foundation to give away some carbon monoxide alarms to keep everyone safe this summer. Keep an eye out for more details soon.
