Several residents have called police recently after getting targeted in the Canada Revenue Agency Scam.
The OPP are once again reminding the public to be cautious of the aptly named Canada Revenue Agency Scam.
Several residents in the region have called police lately about the fraudulent phone calls.
How it works is a fraudster will call you at home or send you an email and tell you that you are under a criminal investigation. They claim to work for the CRA and that you owe the government money from your taxes. They then tell you that if you don't wire them money right away you will be arrested.
Several people have fallen for the scam over the years in Oxford County and the calls are really picking up steam again locally and over in Brant County. The scammers are very crafty and sometimes the call will even show up as the CRA on your call display.
The OPP have released the following tips to help make sure you don't fall victim to this scam.
The Canada Revenue Agency does not do the following:
- The CRA will not request personal information of any kind from a taxpayer by email.
- The CRA will not divulge taxpayer information to another person unless formal authorization is provided by the taxpayer.
- The CRA will not leave any personal information or threatening messages on an answering machine.
When in doubt, ask yourself the following:
- Am I expecting any calls from the CRA?
- Does this sound too good to be true?
- IS the caller able to identify themselves with an ID number that you can verify?
- Is the requester asking for information I would not include with my tax return?
- Is the requester asking for information I know the CRA already has on file for me?
- How did the requester get my email address?
- Am I confident I know who is asking for the information?
