Students on the bus, motorists in school zones, and pedestrians are all part of the focus.
OXFORD COUNTY -- You may notice an increase of social media posts by My Big Yellow Bus this week.
That's because the Southwestern Ontario Student Transportation Services (STS) is marking School Bus Safety Week (October 20-24, 2014) by sharing bus safety theme posts, using #BusSafety14.
STS General Manager Maureen Cosyn Heath points out whether you have kids travelling to school by bus or are a motorist in a school zone, everyone benefits from a focus on road safety, obeying posted speed limits and carefully observing pedestrians.
She says safety is also something the students on the bus need to keep in mind. "They need to stay seated, they need to be facing forward, they need to put their backpacks under their seat or hold them in their laps. And they really need to remember that the driver is busy driving and navigating weather and traffic conditions, so it's great if they can keep the volume down to a dull roar."
Heath says they will be holding bus safety presentations at 15 different elementary schools through the week and will also hold School Bus Driver Appreciation Day on Wednesday, October 22nd. "On that day, we would encourage people to thank their bus driver for the work that they do, acknowledge them in any way they'd want to and we're also opening up our Facebook page that day to take commendations for the bus drivers so that we can pass those along to them for the great work that they do."
STS would like to remind everyone how important it is to obey the law and come to a complete stop while the red signal-lights of a school bus are flashing. Heath reminds motorists that there is a maximum fine of $2,000 under the Highway Traffic Act for vehicle owners who do not obey the law and illegally pass a stopped school bus.
