Bright Residents Speak Out

A potential new subdivision in Bright was a hot topic in Oxford County Council Chambers.

BRIGHT - A lot of Bright residents attended the latest Oxford County Council meeting, to voice their concerns about a potential new subdivision.

They are worried about the water quality in the area, after benzene was found in their wells back in the 90's.

They are also worried about the land itself, because it has been prone to flooding in the past.

Gord Hough, Oxford's Director of Community Planning says residents have nothing to worry about.

"The circulation and the vetting of this application includes reviewing detailed reports about things like storm water management, making sure the capacity is there and that the water quality is sufficient. That's the same everywhere; we're not going to allow a development to proceed on water that's not safe."

Warden David Mayberry echoes Hough's thoughts.

"I understand why people are on edge and concerned and I appreciate the fact that people came forward and said they are worried about it. Public Works is satisfied that they have that situation and they monitor the wells all the time."

Mayberry says the County put in new wells to address the benzene issue 20 years ago and the new subdivision will have a proper storm water management pond in place.

Bright resident Norman J Pigeon was very disappointed to see council approve the application in the end.

"To proceed and give the green light to this is very risky business because there are liabilities I think down the road that will have to be faced."

The development will come back to council for final approval on November 14th.
