TVDSB, LDCSB, and CSC Providence students will be back in the classroom today.
OXFORD COUNTY - It's the first day back to school for students in the Thames Valley District School Board, the London District Catholic School Board, and CSC Providence.
With that being said, the Oxford OPP has some tips to make sure everyone has a safe school year.
Community Safety and Media Relations Officer Randi Crawford says the back-to-school season affects everyone, not just parents and children. Drivers out there need to be more aware of young pedestrians walking to and from school, and make sure they stop for crosswalks.
Crawford says they also need to keep an eye out for school buses and make sure they stop at least 20 metres away when the stop arm is out and the red lights are flashing.
"It gives the students and the school bus driver satisfaction that you are going to be stopping. Let's not do it at the last minute, let's make sure that we are all mindful and give that space and extra time. Let's keep everyone safe."
The students who walk to school are being reminded to look both ways whenever they cross the street and to utilize a crosswalk or a crossing guard whenever possible.
Crawford is also reminding the parents who drive their kids to school to respect the no parking areas during pickup and drop-off times.
"The areas that they have no parking signs, they are there for a reason. The visibility could be impaired, it could be a narrow road so you parking there could impede traffic and increase the possibility that someone could be hurt. So make you obey that and go to the pickup/drop off areas and not the no parking zones."
