The Oxford Attack major bantams continue to show improved play culminating in its first gold medal of the season at the Blessed Sacrament basketball tournament this past weekend in Hamilton. After starting the season with just one win in its first 11 games. The Attack have won 11 of their last 13 games. The major bantams continued to share the ball all weekend while playing some excellent team defense. The Attack went 5-0 and held opponents to an average of 22 points during the weekend. The major bantams defeated Fergus on Friday night 41-15 and then on Saturday won two more pool play games defeating Georgetown 46-22 and Pembroke 52-26. During pool play some of the newer Attack players really showed just how much they've improved. Tyler Rooke led the winners in scoring on Friday night. On Saturday Ryan Lee and Josh Vanderklooster showed extreme confidence on offense and some excellent defense. Ben Mott continued his solid play and Justin Mezenberg played very solid coming back from injury. The Attack then faced a familiar foe in the Cambridge Centaurs in the semi final on Sunday morning. During this third matchup between the two teams, the Attack forced Cambridge to take off its press by scoring easy baskets early and often. Oxfords main guard duo of Chris Cottrell and Kurtis Rooke controlled the game and unselfishly set up Oxfords veteran forwards Nick Keeley, Joshua Flanagan and Derric Pollock with some easy baskets as the Attack went on to an easy 39-21 win. The gold medal game was a tough defensive struggle with the Attack prevailing 34-26. The Attack were led by veterans Pollock, Keeley and Flanagan overcoming a Pollock injury and some Flanagan foul trouble to come away with the win. Player of the tournament for the Attack was Nick Keeley who really found his scoring touch back in the post against some difficult zone defenses this weekend. Next up for the major bantam boys is their last tournament of the year. The provincial championships will be held in Mississauga in two weeks, April 19-21.
