ATM Thefts On The Rise

With the number of ATM thefts up in the region, OPP have some tips for shop owners to protect themselves.

OXFORD/NORFOLK/BRANT - ATM thefts continue to plague Southwestern Ontario. 

Locally they have happened in Embro, Woodstock, Ayr, Burford, Scotland and most recently Waterford. 

Constable Ed Sanchuk has some advice to shop owners. 

"We're urging anyone that has a standalone ATM in their stores; make sure it's not located in the front of the store. We'd like to see all ATM's removed from stores but that's not going to happen because we want to promote businesses and make sure they're successful in the community. What we're finding is people are targeting smaller businesses with an ATM."

In the most recent theft, suspects attached a cable to an ATM at the Waterford TD Canada Trust and used a flatbed truck to remove it from the building.

Sanchuk says they are asking for help from the public. 

"Look out for your community and look out for suspicious behaviours. If you see suspicious behaviour or suspicious vehicles parked around banks or convenience stores after the closing time or during the early morning hours; call the police right away."
