Another pool of mosquitoes has tested positive for West Nile Virus in the region.
The most recent case was from a pool in Mitchell in Perth County. So far 4 mosquito pools in the region have tested positive for West Nile, 1 in Norwich, 1 in Listowel and 2 in Mitchell. Public Health Inspector Stephanie Carlisle tells Heart FM the process for testing mosquito's.
"A mosquito pool was tested for West Nile Virus and a mosquito pool is a group of female mosquito's that all belong to the same species and they are tested at the lab that we send mosquito's to."
Public Health officials are offer the following advice to protect yourself from West Nile.
- Wear light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts and pants when mosquitoes are most active (dusk and dawn).
- Avoid using scented products that attract mosquitoes.
- Use a bug spray with 30% DEET if you are an adult, or a specially formulated DEET product for children according to age.
Another key tip is to prevent breeding grounds on your home by removing any standing water on your property. This includes bird baths, discarded tries, flower pots, wheelbarrows, barrels or tin cans that are left outside.
