A political science expect doesn't think we will ever have an election like this one in Canada.
Americans head to the polls today to end what has been an historic election.
Early polls indicate Hillary Clinton has the edge on Donald Trump as millions of Americans cast their ballot today. Political Science teacher at Fanshawe College Matt Farrell says he has never seen an election like this before in North America.
"In North America no, I have never seen anything like this, however this is par for the course in European politics. Their political parties and the nature of their politics in general tends to be a little more vocal, a little more racist, a lot of different views are represented that we don't typically get into in North America, so in that sense it is unprecedented, at least in the last 30-40 years."
Farrell says he doesn't think Canada will ever experience an election like this, however he does say that anything is possible.
"It's hard to predict something like politics but just in terms of these specific candidates, neither one of them would have been nominated to a Canadian political party, just the background checks the vetting and the hurdles you have to jump through in order to become a candidate for Prim Minister, neither one of these two candidates would of gotten through that given their legal troubles, the lawsuits pending, the fact that one of them didn't release their tax returns. Our political parties control that vetting process and it is a little stricter in Canada than what the American candidates are exposed to."
Farrell expects Hillary Clinton will win today. He says Trump could win if he can capture some of the swing states and we will have a better idea when the first polls start rolling in from the East Coast around 8 pm tonight.
